For a quarter of my life I have been making electronic music on my laptop, I know how to create fun sounds , weird rhythms, noises, and I know how to put them together into an emotionally impactful track. I really loved playing around with sounds and seeing what I can get with them, through plugins I can use on ableton. But for most of the time that I have been making music, this wasn’t something I did often, maybe I would make a synth patch here and there, then I would run with that for many songs over and over, because frankly I was lazy. For a long time I was unable to have fun making music, and I’m not sure if its a symptom of, or caused by this laziness, but eventually I was able to move past this block, when I began experimenting specifically on what weirder sounds I could make, and figuring out how to include them in the context of a song.
I’m partially inspired by the late SOPHIE, who was a pioneer in modern electronic/pop sound design, who approached sound design in a way significantly different than what I was used to. Specifically that she would imagine sounds as different physical objects, and what sounds would come out of non realistic objects, for example, an upright piano made of glass, that is as tall as a mountain. Then with this object in mind, she would create musical sounds to match the timbre of the imaginary object.
I’ve always known how to make music, but what I have not yet challenged myself with is approaching sound from a non-strictly-musical standpoint.
